February News!

Dear Families,
February is another busy month and includes many special days.  We have Valentine’s Day, a trip to the nursing home and several days off school.  Our Valentine’s party will be on Thursday February 14th
Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is exciting for first graders.  We will celebrate on February 14th – it will be a red, white and pink non-uniform/casual day.  Students will be asked to bring valentines for all classmates - I will send a letter home with a class list.  Our school policy is that no candy or edible treats are allowed in valentines.

CARE Theme – Stewardship
Our care theme for the month is Stewardship.  In our community meeting, we began talking about how to be an inclusive friend at school.
Science
This week we have begun our new science unit, “Oceans”.  We had a fabulous trip to the Minnesota Zoo.  With journals in tow, we observed ocean creatures like real scientists and not just tourists.  We observed, sketched and wrote about penguins, the Coral Reef and Discovery Bay.  We hope you enjoyed watching our slide show on the class blog.
Writer’s Workshop
We have some amazing “opinion writers” in our classroom.  The past few weeks we have been focusing on writing reviews – reviews of restaurants, stores, movies, video games, etc.  This has been a challenging unit for our young writers; however, their growth has been amazing!  I look forward to having you read their reviews soon.
Within a few weeks, your child will begin writing an All-About Book, complete with chapters. Each book will have a table of contents, and children will be learning to organize their information into the appropriate chapters. They will be learning that each chapter has its own organizational structure.  For now, these All-About Books will be based on “things in the ocean” in which your child has personal expertise.
